Free Summer Lessons Program – Ebute Metta, Lagos (2018)

Target Amount:

In the heart of Ebute Metta, Lagos, The Anita Oromoni Foundation (TAOF) launched a transformative summer learning program in partnership with Dream Nurture Initiative and Dream Catchers Foundation. This six-week initiative served over 300 children from underprivileged backgrounds, providing them with a unique blend of academic support and creative arts education during the summer break.

Academic Excellence Initiative

The program’s academic component focused on strengthening students’ foundational knowledge in core subjects. Experienced teachers conducted engaging sessions in Mathematics, English Language, Basic Science, and Social Studies. Students received personalized attention in small group settings, ensuring that each child’s learning needs were met. The curriculum was specially designed to bridge learning gaps and prepare students for the upcoming academic year.
Special emphasis was placed on developing strong reading comprehension skills through our “Read to Lead” program, which included daily reading sessions, vocabulary building exercises, and storytelling activities. Students showing particular difficulty in certain subjects received additional one-on-one tutoring support.

Creative Arts and Expression

Understanding that education extends beyond traditional academics, we incorporated a robust creative arts program. Students participated in daily arts sessions that included:
  • Dance workshops that celebrated both contemporary and traditional Nigerian dance forms
  • Music classes featuring vocal training and basic instrument instruction
  • Visual arts sessions where students learned drawing, painting, and craft-making
  • Drama classes that built confidence through performance and public speaking
These creative sessions proved particularly effective in helping shy students come out of their shells and discover new talents.

Skills Development and Mentorship

Beyond academic and creative instruction, the program emphasized practical life skills development. Professional volunteers from various fields conducted weekly mentorship sessions, sharing their experiences and providing career guidance. Students learned essential skills such as:
  • Public speaking and presentation techniques
  • Basic financial literacy and money management
  • Digital skills including computer basics and internet safety
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking through interactive workshops

Community Impact and Engagement

The program created a ripple effect throughout the Ebute Metta community. Parents reported significant improvements in their children’s confidence and academic performance. Local businesses contributed by providing meals and supplies, while community leaders offered venues and security support.
Weekly parent engagement sessions were conducted to ensure family involvement in the children’s learning journey. These sessions included:
  • Progress updates on their children’s development
  • Guidance on supporting learning at home
  • Workshops on child development and education
  • Community building activities

Measurable Outcomes

The program’s success was evident in both quantitative and qualitative measures:
  • 85% of participants showed marked improvement in core subject assessments
  • Attendance remained consistently high at 90% throughout the program
  • Student confidence levels increased significantly, as measured through before-and-after surveys
  • Parents reported improved study habits and enthusiasm for learning at home
  • Many students discovered new talents and interests through the creative arts program

Sustainable Impact

To ensure lasting impact, we implemented several sustainability measures:
  • Created detailed learning resources for continued use
  • Trained local volunteers to support ongoing educational initiatives
  • Established a community library with donated books and materials
  • Developed partnerships with local schools for continued support

Looking Forward

The success of the Ebute Metta summer program has become a model for future TAOF educational initiatives. Plans are underway to:
  • Expand the program to additional locations in Lagos
  • Develop year-round support systems for participants
  • Create online learning resources for broader reach
  • Strengthen partnerships with educational organizations
The program demonstrated that when given the right opportunities and support, every child can excel. Through this initiative, TAOF not only provided educational support but also helped build a stronger, more educated community in Ebute Metta.
